Reading Rate and Comprehension

THE NATURE OF THE COURSE

Many students view reading as a simple, though often burdensome activity. It is not. Reading is an intricate skill that must be applied to many different kinds of material for many different reasons, and a student cannot expect to work effectively if he or she must read everything in the same way. Efficient reading demands flexibility! To that end, Learning Skills-Correct Read's Reading Rate and Comprehension program trains students to use a variety of survey, reading, and self-pacing techniques. With these techniques students learn to evaluate critically what they read and to respond in a way that allows them to read as quickly as possible, yet still come away with a clearer grasp of the ideas they've encountered.

CONCERNING STUDY SKILLS

Students should understand that this course differs from the traditional Learning Skills-Correct Read program since it focuses on rate and comprehension, not on study skills. The goal is to extend the range of rates over which a student can read and to insure that, at whatever reading rate, comprehension and retention are satisfactory. Such areas as concentration techniques, review procedures, logical analysis, and time management cannot be dealt with directly. However, during the course the Learning Skills-Correct Read instructor is available for consultation on specific study problems.

COURSE MATERIALS

During class, students make use of training equipment provided by the teacher. Each student uses this equipment individually in developing the course techniques and in applying these techniques to his or her own materials. In fact, students work primarily in their own textbooks and novels. Although sample materials might be used to demonstrate a particular technique, after each brief demonstration students immediately begin applying the skills they've learned to the work already assigned in their academic courses.

COURSE EVALUATIONS

At the end of the program, each student receives from the instructor a report discussing his or her progress and making recommendations for continued work. The college or school receives a copy of each report, a summary of student progress, and a survey of student evaluations.

CANDIDATES FOR THE COURSE

Few students learn to read as well as they might without special training. Accordingly, this program is not just for "poor" students. No matter how well or how poorly a student may be reading now, this course provides the skills and training a student needs to get the most out of his or her abilities. For pre-college students, the Rate and Comprehension program can be an important part of their SAT preparation, since the current format of the verbal SAT puts a heavier emphasis on reading rate and comprehension skills (especially inference and efficiency). Similarly, for upperclassmen, such training can be a considerable help in the different Graduate Entrance Exams (GRE/MCAT/LSAT).
