Teacher Workshop

The Objective: Train teachers to teach students how to read faster, think more clearly, evaluate critically, and retain text material longer.

Do Your Students Need:

  • to increase their reading rate and improve their comprehension?
  • a procedure for understanding a difficult passage without multiple re-readings?
  • procedures for annotating material efficiently and effectively?
  • a method for analyzing and critiquing information from one or several sources?
  • techniques for better concentration?
  • a model for summarization and presentation of material?
  • a method for storing and recalling details?
  • methods of preview and review?
  • a system for taking lecture notes, reworking, consolidating and reviewing them, and collating them with texts?
  • to distinguish relevant information in a mass a of material, and to connect it in a coherent and meaningful way?

The Program is...

DIRECTED- to the faculty's concerns. Each technique is applied to current academic texts and books. We help teachers understand the rationale behind the methodology we have developed and which they themselves may already (in some form) use. A teacher can only train a student effectively in these skills if he/she can explain not only the procedure but the basis of their effectiveness and the optimal goal to be attained.

The Results are...

IMPRESSIVE! What the teachers learn in the workshop is transferable to their students in class. The study methods can be easily included in the lesson plans, both as instructional tools and as homework assignments. While the subject content is being taught, the method of approach is being developed. The long-term benefits are obvious.

CANDIDATES FOR THE COURSE

The ideas presented in the course are logical, powerful tools that can be used effectively by teachers and students at all levels. Employing, with only a slight modification, the training regimen we use to prepare our own staff teachers, we can instruct faculty members in the methods and strategies of rate, comprehension, and study skills techniques. Once learned, the strategies are then adapted by the faculty to the needs of their particular academic field.
